Makailey's Birth Story

It has been quite the adventure to bring our little angel into the world. We had several tests and extra ultrasounds done throughout the pregnancy to ensure that she was still growing and maturing correctly. we anticipated that she was going to be a small baby but have kept a careful eye on her growth.

On September 6, 2011 Erica went in for a weekly check up. After talking with the Midwife, a non stress test (NST) and ultrasound were ordered to assure that she was still growing, that she had enough fluid and that the placenta was still functioning.

It was a busy day at the hospital and the earliest we could schedule the test was 1P.M. that afternoon. We came prepared just in case with our hospital bag and boy were we glad! The NST looked great showing a strong fetal heart beat, however the ultrasound showed border line fluid levels that were a little concerning. While our midwife and a high risk OB doctor tried to decide what was best to do Makailey's heart rate suddenly dropped dangerously low and made the decision for them. We were admitted at 2P.M. and the roller coster ride began.

After being moved to our own labor and deliver room and monitoring her heart for awhile we were given the first treatment to induce labor. It took 3 tries to get it to take but we were successful and the 12 hour waiting clock began.
We spent the night in labor and delivery with great nurses and grandma and grandpa Thacker who drove up from St. George to be with us (aren't they awesome!?!).

On Wednesaday September 7, 2011 at 8 A.M. the pitocin was given and we were in active labor by 1:30 P.M. Finaly at 4:54 P.M. Makailey Lynn arrived!

She had low blood sugar at birth and a low body temperature. These things combinded with her low birth weight (5 lbs. 10 oz.) and being growth resricted in the womb sent her to the NICU for the evening, just to be safe.
In the NICU they monitored her body temp. and blood sugar and released her back to us arond 10 P.M. because she was showing significant improvement, however they continued to check her blood sugar regularly. She had a really low count at 1 A.M. and was officially admitted into the NICU where she has been a guest since.

Makailey has improved her blood sugar enough to be taken off Her I.V. and is able to sustain her body temperature now. She recieving antibiotics every few hours to ward off any infections(very common with low birth weight babies) and is being treated for jaundice still. They continue to check her blood sugar and temperature every few hours, but her results continue to show how strong she is. we are optimistic that if she continues to progress at the rate she has been, we will get to bring her home (possibly with treatment for jaundice) sunday.

She has shown significant improvement each day and we are very thankful for the wonderful care she has recieved at the hands of the NICU nurses and her pediatrician Dr. Hurley.

Thank you for all of your love and prayers on our behalf. We Love You!
